Young golfers impress Ladies Tour players

Sixteen girls from clubgolf and county coaching programmes in East Lothian and the Borders enjoyed a unique opportunity to be coached by three of Scotland's Ladies European Tour players taking part in last week's Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open.

Carly Booth, Krystle Caithness and Lynn Kenny spent an hour with the girls — aged between 10 to 18 years old — at Archerfield Links in East Lothian.

The girls are amongst the 3000 in Scotland being coached at clubs and county associations, supported by the national junior golf programme, clubgolf.

"I thought the girls were fantastic," said Lynn Kenny. "Some of them had great golf swings and to think of the age they are and the handicaps they have got down to already it's inspiring.

Enjoying

"I got down to a handicap of 14 when I was 14 and scratch when I was maybe 16 or 17. Some of these girls are playing off 5 and they are youngsters! It's great and it shows that clubgolf is doing the right thing and the talent is coming through at an early age."

Thirty-year-old Kenny from Dunblane is enjoying a solid season on the Ladies European Tour, currently lying in 61st spot.

She admits it all started for her when as a nine year old she picked up a cut-down club and headed off to the golf club with her parents. From humble beginnings she 'hasn't looked back since'.

Involved

Through clubgolf's introductory game firstclubgolf, which has introduced an estimated 19,000 Primary 5 girls to the sport this year, and with 300 clubs in Scotland all offering clubgolf coaching this summer, the opportunities have never been better for a new generation of female girl golfers.

Experiences like the clinic at Archerfield will only help keep girl golfers interested and involved.

"Coaching clinics like this one raise the profile for women's golf in general and certainly the girls can take away some pointers from it and hopefully improve their game," said East Lothian Ladies County Golf Association Junior Convenor, Lesley Nicholson, who took 14 of her squad players to the clinic.

"It was a great opportunity for the girls to meet the pros, pick up some tips, and generally get involved and see the level they can aspire
