Tranent take on Hi Hi in derby
Action from Musselburgh Athletic v Camelon Juniors
East Lothian junior football local rivalry comes to Millfield Park tomorrow as Haddington Atletic clash with Tranent Juniors in the East Region South League, writes Striker.
This will be the first league meeting of the season between these two who did meet earlier in Section D of the League Cup with victory at Foresters Park going to the Hi Hi by 3-2.
Third top of the South League with three more league games played than Haddington, the Belters are seven points better off with both teams having suffered four league defeats each.
Tranent Juniors
Tranent will be looking forward to a competitive Saturday after being idle last Saturday but boosted by their last game, a 3-1 win over Falkirk Juniors who, as expected, beat visitors Pumpherston 4-2 to go top of the South League this week. Second top Dalkeith Thistle slipped up 3-1 at home to Blackburn United last Saturday.
Tranent will also be keen to avenge that League Cup defeat at home and an entertaining game is in prospect. Haddington themselves had a better day of it with a solid 5-2 win away at Edinburgh United’s Paties Road last weekend and the East Lothian local derby match deserves a good crowd.
Musselburgh Athletic
Musselburgh Athletic had a fine 2-0 home win over Camelon Juniors last Saturday to boost their Super League points tally.
This Saturday Burgh leave league affairs behind them and travel to face Hill o’ Beath in the second round of the Fife and Lothians Cup and with the third round draw having been made the winners on Saturday in Fife will be away to Cup holders Linlithgow Rose in the next round.
This Saturday is the third meeting of these two Super League rivals — Burgh beat Hill o’ Beath 2-1 at Olivebank in the second round of the Scottish Cup in October but in December the Hawes gained some revenge by winning the Super League match at Musselburgh 4-2.
Musselburgh have still to go to Scottish Cup 5th round contestants Kinnoull in the second round of the East of Scotland Cup where success would see Burgh visit Haddington in the third round.
Musselburgh had a hard fought victory over Camelon on Saturday but gained a good three points.
After an evenly contested first half Burgh took the lead two minutes before the break when Chris King scored with a well placed shot low past the keeper from just outside the box.
Camelon had chances to level the game but the points were sealed in injury time when Kris Renton chested the ball down from a throw in and flicked the ball over a defender before volleying past the keeper from a tight angle for a goal of real quality.
Musselburgh Athletic: Renton, Burns, Gordon, Hamilton, Shand, C. King, Currie, K. Renton, M. King, Tansey, Subs: Murray, Ingles, Adams.
Dunbar United
Dunbar United return to New Countess Park on Saturday to face Edinburgh United after their 2-1 defeat away to Whitburn last weekend.
The Seasiders will be chasing a league double over the City men having won at Paties Road 2-0 in November. Dunbar’s defeat at Whitburn was their first reverse in three months.
Whitburn had new signing Craig Scott on the sub’s bench and he would prove to be the match winner in the end with a brace of goals.
It was the visitors who had the first shot at goal in the 10th minute when a Ross Hastie effort was deflected for a corner past Scott Ritchie’s dive. From then on, the half was dominated by Whitburn and Bryan King, having been found by Scott Meldrum, fired wide from a good position just a minute later.
On the quarter hour King had a tame shot easily saved after a great long ball from Alan Mooney had put him in. On the half hour King had another weakly hit shot saved and he injured himself in making the attempt, partly caused by the soft ground.
The deadlock was broken in the 62nd minute as Barry Craig found the new boy and Scott slammed a great shot in off the underside of the bar.
Six minutes later Scott picked up a loose ball wide on the right, about 35 yards out, and unleashed a shot that flew into the top corner over the despairing John Johnstone to double the lead.
With four minutes to go the visitors got a lifeline when Andy Gordon fouled an attacker in the box and Robertson made no mistake from the spot.
Dunbar United: Johnstone, Tait, Hastie (Thomson), Morgan, Lothian, McEwan, Girdwood, Robertson, Jones, Lees, Grant. Subs: Weir, Gibb, Brown, Leslie, Johnston.
Haddington Athletic
The Hi Hi enjoyed a thumping 5-2 win over Edinbuirgh United at Paties Road on Saturday.
The opening goal arrived inside 10 minutes and stemmed from a ball played forward to Simpson on the right touchline. The youngster’s cross found Conaghan out on the left of the penalty area in good space, and he took a touch to control the ball before picking his spot and coolly depositing it in the back of the net.
In 29 minutes it was 2-0 with right back Matty Lynch being credited with his fifth of the season but his free kick from well outside the penalty area took a wicked deflection off the defensive wall before dipping under the bar with the keeper helpless.
The hosts pulled a goal back in 35 mintues thanks to a Cockburn penalty but Haddington notched another two goals before the interval to put themselves firmly in control.
On 41 minutes a great move started with Combe rolling the ball out to Conaghan on the left. Kevin Bracks sent a high cross into the box, the ball falling to Conaghan in a very similar position to that from which he’d scored the opener. The midfielder had enjoyed a fine first half and he showed the same calmness as earlier in finding the net with a composed angled finish for his tenth goal of the season.
Jamieson came close to a fourth moments later, just clearing the bar, but Martin ensured a 4-1 interval lead with a well-struck free kick three minutes into injury time which dipped just under the right side of the bar.
Yusi Bernawi replaced Martin midway through the second half and the substitute was involved in Haddington’s fifth goal within three minutes of his introduction, taking a pass from Cropley on the byeline to the left of goal before chipping the ball into the six yard box where Jamieson was well-placed to head home from close range.
Collins scored United’s second with a shot from a tight angle on the right.
