Young athletes from East Lothian were presented with awards at ceremonies in Glasgow and Haddington recently.

At the Scottish Athletics Gala Awards dinner in Glasgow Lauren Peffers (EAC) from Dunbar was presented with the trophy for best Scottish athlete with a disability for her performance in the 21st Deaf Olympics in Taipei China where she won silver medals in both the 400m and 800m events.

In Haddington Town House the East Lothian Athletics Development Group held their AGM and announced the winners of the Young Athlete of the year awards.

The awards instituted just last year to recognise young developing athletes under 17 proved a difficult task.

Excellent

With Ross Matheson (LAC) from Tranent and holder of the young male athlete award now over 17, the final nominations were Robert Ferguson from Dunbar RC, a 15-year-old high jumper, and 16-year-old Peter Loudon (EAC) from Prestonpans, a middle distance athlete.

The contest in the young female athlete award was just as close with the 2008 winner Rachel Lindsay from Dunbar having another excellent year and Fiona Cleat from Pencaitland also showing fine form. Both girls are sprinter/hurdlers.

The envelopes were opened by Helen Bruce, East Lothian's Community Development Officer, and the awards went to Fiona Cleat, the Scottish 300m hurdles champion and Peter Loudon, the East Lothian 800m champion.

After a two year break Brian Marshall, HELP’s Scottish hill running champion, again won the event in 54m28s for the nine mile course but was chased home by a new young athlete from Haddington Callum Reid (EAC) in 57m50s.

Dunbar RC’s duo Ian Rowland and Stuart Hay had a close battle with just five seconds separating them at the finish, 60m30s. Eddie Balfour, 63m40s, and Sandy Wallace, 68m10s, were HELP’s second and third place finishers.

Julie Oswald, 74m32s, had a six minute advantage over Ruth Watson for the women’s award.
