Formed in 1928, East Lothian Yacht Club has never had a female commodore — until now. For Sheila Smith made history at the club when she took over this post from former commodore, Hugh Marston

Sheila, who lives in Dunbar, started sailing as a teenager, learning on her father’s 14-foot clinker-built dinghy during holidays with her family on Loch Torridon. She joined ELYC in 1997, becoming assistant race secretary in 2006 and rear commodore in 2008.

A keen dinghy sailor, Sheila joins in club racing in North Berwick most weekends.
