Paul is best badminton Scot in Portugal

East Lothian's Paul Van Rietvelde put up the best Scotland performance at the 45th Victor Portuguese International at the weekend when he and England's Ben Stawski reached the semi finals before losing to Croatian pair Zvonimir Durkinjak and Zvonimir Hoelbling 21-15 21-9 in Caldas da Rainha.

The Anglo-Scottish pair went down to the second seeds after winning a gruelling quarter-final earlier on Saturday, beating German fourth seeds Maurice Niesner and Till Zander 21-18 10-21 21-19.

Young pair Martin Campbell (Edinburgh) and Angus Gilmour (Troon) went out in the first round 23-21 18-21 21-13 against Denmark's Mats Bue and Rene Lindskow.

In the men's singles fourth seed Kieran Merrilees' faint hopes of a place in the Badminton Europe Circuit finals disappeared with a second-round exit.

He beat Hungary's Henrik Toth 21-17 13-21 21-17 but went down to Germany's Fabian Hammes 21-13 21-12. Glasgow team-mate Gordon Thomson lost in the first round to Denmark's Sune Gavnholt 21-19 21-19.

In the mixed doubles Van Rietvelde and England's Alex Langley made a first-round exit against Dutch third seeds Jacco Arends and Selena Piek 21-14 21-17.
