Pairs triumph makes up for singles despair
East Lothian ace Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall and ex garden county teammate Paul Foster put their disappointing shock exits in the singles behind them to make a successful defence of their world pairs indoor bowling title at Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk.
The deadly duo defeated the experienced Welsh pairing of Jason Greenslade and Robert Weale in straight sets. The first set was a tight affair, with the defending champions, who saw a 6-1 advantage slip away, snatching it 7-6 with a single on the last end, but it was one-way traffic in the second as the Scots stormed to an 11-1 victory and with it the distinction of being only the second pair to successfully defend the title in World Bowls Tour history.
Meanwhile, Marshall’s hopes of winning a record extending sixth world indoor singles were well and truly dashed when he made a shock first round exit in the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Championships against South African qualifier Craig Rimmington.
