At the end of the main sailing season, East Lothian Yacht Club hires a mobile crane to lift members’ yachts from the harbour, either onto trailers to be taken away for winter storage and maintenance, or for storage on the harbour wall.
At the same time, the Yacht Club offers the services of the crane to other harbour users such as fishermen and commercial boat owners.
Saturday’s crane-out was a record, with 27 boats lifted out, and the crane was busy from 9am until 5pm.
Long-time ELYC member Bill Roberts acted as cranemaster to give instructions to the crane operator and to guide the boats onto their trailers. Next spring, the procedure will be reversed as the boats are lifted into the harbour ready for a new season. Many of the club’s dinghy sailors will continue racing throughout the winter every Saturday, weather permitting.
