New athletics track to open in summer
East Lothian’s long awaited new all weather tartan athletic track will be officially opened on Sunday June 10. An invitation is going out to two of East Lothian’s world famous athletes to participate. Representing speed and the professional aspect of athletics it is hoped that double New Year and Stawell Gift champion George McNeill, along with Olympic, European, Commonwealth endurance multi medallist Yvonne Murray-Mooney will be able to attend.
The event is planned to showcase a four hour athletics bonanza at all levels and will include a one mile fun run.
Highlight of the afternoon will be two international events for men and women, one of which will be an attempt on a four minute mile. The afternoon will close with a mixed age group 1600 metre medley relay.
The East Lothian Athletic Development Group planning committee hope to raise interest from sponsors across the county.
The track itself will hopefully be completed and equipment storage facilities built by May when the track will be open for use by schools, clubs and the public.
