Mitchell keeps bowls win in the family
THE final of this year's Cruden Trophy was held on at the Musselburgh Municipal Bowling green between two young pretenders, one representing the host green and the other representing Inveresk Bowling Club.
Martin Nisbet, representing Musselburgh Municipal Bowling Club, was in his first Cruden final, as was Jamie Mitchell (Jnr) from Inveresk Bowling Club.
The match started with four ends and the score was level at three shots each then, at the fifth end, the first breakthrough for Mitchell with three shots.
This seemed to spur Nisbet on, as he then took the next four ends 1,3,1,1 to move into the lead 9-6.
Again the balance swung back in the favour of Mitchell with a 2 and a 4 in the next two ends, taking him into 12-9 lead.
Turned
The next few ends were eagerly contested with each player receiving three shots each taking the score to 15-12.
On the 17th and again on the 20th and 22nd end Mitchell turned around ends which were against him to take a 20-14 lead.
Nisbet continued to keep the match alive by picking up a 2 and a 1 consecutively to get within three shots of his opponent, but on the next end, when Nisbet was lying shot, Mitchell took out the shot bowl to win the 2010 final.
Excellent
In winning, Jamie Mitchell (Jnr) continued the success of Inveresk in this trophy following his father Jamie Mitchell (Snr) who won the same trophy last year and also in 2005 and 2007.
The match had been played by both players in a good manner and was an excellent game of bowls.
The losing semi-finalists were M Robertson (Musselburgh) and R Park (Eskmills).
Thanks to all partipants, and a special thanks to the committee and green staff at the Municipal Bowling Club.
