India beckons for bowls veteran Wood

Interest in the bowls sector of the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in October has been raised in East Lothian by the announcement last week of the 12 person team to represent Scotland in a major international Test series.

Delhi is to host the 8-nation event from April 6 to 10 with the countries involved expected to include England, Northern Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, and India.

Scotland's bowls hierarchy plan to nominate their final selections to the Commonwealth Games Council in late June for ratification and, rightly or wrongly, the bowls community believes the test line-up shows which way the wind is blowing.

Reserve

Which is exciting news for East Lothian as the men's line up includes West Barns legend Willie Wood MBE and the ladies six strong team includes Port Seton ace Lauren Baillie.

The highly respected Wood was initially named as a reserve but received a call-up following the withdrawal of David Gourlay from the team.

Spearhead

Wood is named in the middle of former East Lothian player Wayne Hogg and Midlothian icon David Peacock in the men's triple while Baillie is in the middle of the ladies triple with Lynn Stein of Fife at lead and Midlothian's Agnes Melrose at skip.

East Lothian IBC top skip Paul Foster plays the spearhead role in the singles.

Brodie was nip and tuck all the way against Robert Finlay but tipped the scales with a 5, 2, 1, (1), 1, 1 finish to skip Jock Cunningham, George McLean and Brian Bissett to a 18-11 victory. Holmes had to battle hard from 6-4 to skip Tony Taylor, Harry Irvine and John Hamilton to an 18-12 win over Jim Kerr. The side were back in cup action on Wednesday when they tackled Bainfield in a last 16 clash at neutral West Lothian IBC.

Meanwhile the ongoing qualifying action in the Jock Brodie Senior Challenge Cup, sponsored by Norman T Craig and Co-operative Funeralcare, resumed on Wednesday when Tweedbank B tackled East Lothian B while West Lothian went head-to-head with Falkirk.

East Lothian IBC’s youth side are back in East of Scotland Junior League action tomorrow morning and they hope home carpet advantage against local rivals Midlothian will enable them to continue their winning form.
