Gold for East Lothian duo

Both Ross Matheson (Ross High) and Peter Loudon (Preston Lodge) won gold medals at the Scottish Schools Athletic Championships last week-end in the Senior Boys category.

Ross won the 1500 metres comfortably in 4m06.58s having recently broken the 4m barrier for the metric mile, and Peter, who has gradually lowered his personal best times over two laps, won in 1m56.6s. Both boys are winners of the East Lothian Young Athlete award for 2008 and 2009.

Peter also competed in the 400 metres event, winning his heat in 52.69 and picked up the bronze medal in the final with 51.62s.

Robert Ferguson (Dunbar Grammar) cleared 1.75m in the senior high jump, the third highest jump but had to settle for joint fourth place based on a jump off situation.

Tackle

Other East Lothian young athletes taking part included Fiona Matheson who was sixth in her heat of the 1500m in 2m36.6s; Luke Baker sixth in his heat of the 100m in 12.14s and Andrew Loudon was 11th in the discus final with a throw of 23.57mts.

A field of 73 runners set off last Saturday from the East Linton Gala field to tackle the Traprain Law and a dip in the river Tyne on the way back.

Donald Naylor (HBT) just managed to hold off double former champion Brian Marshall (HELP) in 39m12s with the compensation that Marshall won the O-40 veteran award. Al Hart (HBT) was third and helped Hunters Bog Trotters to win the team award.
