East Lothian senior side reaches Scottish League Cup final

The senior side from East Lothian IBC are in the midst of cup final fever after they clinched a place in the Scottish Senior League Cup final following a convincing 17 shot victory over Elgin in last Wednesday’s semi-final action at Dundee IBC.

The four times champions earned the chance to capture the title for a record making fifth time with a 75-58 triumph.

The rinks skipped by Willie Wood and John Holmes both lost.

However, wins for captain Frankie Gray and Jock Brodie more than compensated. Gray produced the sweepstake winning performance as he skipped Eric Denholm, George Marshall and Jim Smith to an impressive 29-7 triumph.

Brodie skipped Jim Neilson, George McLean and Brian Bisset to a splendid 24-6 win. Wood, meanwhile, was looking good for a win having skipped Alister Russell, Ross McGuire and Tom Young into 10-8 ascendancy but a late collapse cost them a 22-15 defeat.

Holmes and his rink of Arthur Duncan, Billy Higgins and John Hamilton were always up against the collar in a 23-7 defeat.

East Lothian will tackle West B section winners Lanarkshire in the final on Wednesday February 15 at 12noon with the final being staged at Fraserburgh IBC.

Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall quickly needs to get over his disappointing shock first round exit in the recent World Indoor Singles as he heads to Llanelli this weekend for the week long Welsh Grand Prix, the final ranking event of the World Bowls Tour season.

Staged at the Samuel Selwyn Centre in Llanelli from February 4-10, the Co-operative Funeralcare Welsh Grand Prix will feature the top 16 bowlers in the world joined by qualifiers from Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel and New Zealand. The championship will also boast full live coverage by BBC2 Wales (Sky Channel 991).

Marshall enters the portable rink on Sunday at 1pm when he opens against Australian qualifier Brett Wilkie.

Former garden county player Wayne Hogg, fresh from his terrific run in the world indoor singles, is also in action at Llanelli and he will be seeking revenge against world indoor singles runner-up Jason Greenslade when the two clash in the opening round on Monday at 4.30pm.

It was a case of so near yet so far for East Lothian champions Margaret Devine, Yvonne Veitch and Emma Brown in last weekend’s ladies national triples playdown action at West Lothian IBC.

The trio put up a bold challenge that only came to grief in their section semi-final. The EL champions opened their campaign with a nail biting 17-16 win over Headwell then followed with a narrow 19-16 triumph over Stirling.

The next opposition came in the shape of defending champions East Fife and things looked good for EL when leading 4-0 after four ends .

But the roof was about to cave in on Brown and Co and the danger signal came on End 8 with the loss of a 4 that formed part of disappointing avalanche leading to a 23-9 defeat.

Chris O’Brien, Calum Gordon and Struan Robertson carried the East Lothian banner in the gents playdown action but they were 24-9 victims of East Fife in the prelim round action at Falkirk IBC.

Last Wednesday’s ongoing qualifying action in the Jock Brodie Senior Challenge Cup, sponsored by Norman T Craig and Co-operative Funeralcare, saw Midlothian overpower West Lothian to win 10-0 on points while Headwell came out on top 8-2 in a tremendous encounter with East Lothian B.

The action continued on Wednesday with only one fixture being staged as East Lothian A tackled Portobello.

East Lothian IBC youth players Calvert Allison and Calum Darling will be the local representative in Sunday’s playdown action in the Greengauge Junior Challenge tournament at Abbeyview IBC in Dunfermline.

Playdown action is also being staged at East Lothian IBC from 10am.
