East Lothian welcomes world's top young golfers

Golf fans in East Lothian are being given a rare chance to watch some of the future stars of the game competing on the links.

Hundreds of budding Rory McIlroys will take to the links in East Lothian at the start of June for the U.S. Kids Golf European Championship – one of the most prestigious junior golf tournaments in the world.

The three-day event showcases emerging talent in the game and will feature almost 500 junior golfers aged between six and 18.

Many of the young competitors have already been tipped as potential Major-winners of the future and will be eager to showcase their skills in the home of golf.

Talent

The tournament, which is being staged across four local, will also feature competitors from as far afield as Australia, Venezuela, India, Columbia and Egypt, as well as United States and from all over the UK.

Tournament co-ordinator Alasdair Good, who is the head PGA professional at Gullane Golf Club, said: "The U.S. Kids Golf European Championship always showcases the best emerging talent in the game and this year will involve one of the biggest fields of competitors we have ever had."

The tournament over June 1-3 will take place on four courses — Gullane No. 2, Gullane No. 3, Craigielaw Golf Club and Longniddry Golf Club —which are modified for each age group in order to provide the same level challenge, meaning holes are progressively shorter as the age groups get younger.

The top finishers in each category will then compete in the Van Horn Cup over Gullane No 1 – a showpiece event, modelled on the Ryder Cup, where the best European players are pitted against the top non-Europe golfers. The top five finishers in each age and gender group will automatically receive an invitation to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships at Pinehurst Golf Club, North Carolina, in August.

This year’s competition has been expanded to allow 15 to 18-year-olds to compete for the first time, and it is hoped this will encourage even more entries from junior golfers across the globe.
