Victory for East Lothian tomorrow (Saturday) against arch rivals West Lothian will secure top spot in the East section of the Scottish Counties Championship.

The county side surged two points clear of the chasing pack following a convincing 31 shot win (132-101) over local rivals Midlothian at Newbattle BC last Saturday.

“We are in a fantastic position going into the final match but we must remain very much focused as a heavy defeat tomorrow could see both West Lothian and Edinburgh & Leith pick our pockets for the top two places,” said team captain Brian Young.

Winning performances were served up by the rinks skipped by Brian Young, Alister Kennedy, Derek Oliver and Billy Mellors while Steven Morgan and Alex Marshall MBE both lost. Young made a spectacular 4, 1, 1, 4, 1 start to lead 11-0 and never looked back to skip Kenny McCrorie, Scott Logan and Jamie Higgins to a whopping 32-14 win over John Stevenson.

Kennedy included a highlight run of 1, 4, 3, (1), 3, 2 to lead 13-1 then skipped Ross Irvine, Richard Black and elder brother Scott to a 26-14 win over Daniel McDougall. Oliver came late with a run of 2, 4 to skip Chris ‘six out of six’ Johnston, Jamie Gordon and Colin Glen to a 24-19 win over fellow cap David Peacock.

Mellors made a strong contribution with a purple patch run of 3, 2, 2, 1, 2 to skip Mathew Osborne, Craig McLeod and John McCrorie into a 21-10 lead after 17-ends but became hard pressed before clinching a 21-17 win over Craig Hodge. Morgan and his front three of Ronnie Branley, David Sked and Craig Valentine led 14-7 before losing 20-17 to Colin McFarlance while Stuart Thomson, Dougie Berwick and Willie Wood MBE and Marshall never recovered from a poor middle phase and went down 23-12 to Ramsay Blair.
