East Lothian pair start new year with high hopes

The strong East Lothian IBC pairing of Jamie Higgins and Derek Oliver enter the New Year with high hopes of once again giving an excellent account of themselves in the Scottish 4 Bowl Pair championships which take centre stage this weekend at various venues across the country.

The county champions, who were national runners-up in 2011, are in action at Whiteinch IBC tomorrow (Saturday) and face a preliminary round confrontation with a pairing from Coatbridge on the 9.30am session. The East Lothian challenge in the ladies playdown action also looks in good hands as Emma Brown and Janet Fairnie are also in action at Whiteinch IBC tomorrow and enter the fray on the 2pm session with a first round clash against Fintry.

East Lothian legend Willie Wood MBE will once again spearhead the garden county attack in the upcoming Scottish Mixed Team Championship event after he secured his place in the singles berth following his recent hard fought 21-14 win over current ladies champion Dee Hoggan in the team championship singles finals. Yvonne Veitch and current gents singles champion Dougie Berwick will be the representatives in the mixed pairs after they held most of the aces to beat Norma Bauld and Stevie Clark 23-17 in the final.

In other finals played Emma Brown defeated Rose McAinsh 21-14 in the ladies 2 bowl singles, Jock Brodie triumphed in the pre xmas senior fours and Kieran Simants, Tommy Young and Dougie Berwick emerged victorious in the pre xmas gents triples after edging a thriller against Scott Kennedy, Andrew Jeffrey and Billy Mellors 7-5.

A number of finals were also being staged last night (Thursday) and tonight (Friday), with the action getting underway at 6.30pm both nights. Taking place last night was the finals of the mixed triples, featuring Stevie Thomson against Willie Wood and the pre xmas senior triples between Bill Fenton and Kenny Boyd.

In tonight’s finals Jock Henderson and Peter Fallen feature in the climax to the mixed fours event, Bill Fenton and John Holmes square up in the pre xmas senior pairs while Bill Fotheringham and Ian Inglis clash in the Division 2 play off.

The talented senior side returns to Scottish Senior League action this coming Wednesday (January 9) when they entertain Portobello in an East B section encounter at Meadowmill stadium.

Its congratulations to the youth side from West Lothian IBC after they were crowned champions of the East Lothian IBC Youth Team Championship tournament last Friday. West Lothian defeated tournament favourites Abbeyview in a closely fought final to get their hands on the prestigious East Lothian Council trophy.

Finally, East Lothian Indoor Bowling Club is now offering half season memberships at a cost of £35 for full members and £20 for junior members. Anyone wishing to join should call into Meadowmill Stadium or apply online at www.elibc.co.uk
