East Lothian pair in semis

The strong East Lothian IBC partnership of Jamie Higgins and Derek Oliver produced four excellent performances as they qualified through to the semi-finals of the Scottish 4 Bowl Pairs Championships.

The pair were at Whiteinch IBC, Glasgow, for the playdown action and showed their class to win four tough games and reach the last four stage.

They opened last Saturday morning with a hard fought 23-20 win over Coatbridge then added a 26-14 win over West of Scotland in the afternoon session.

On Sunday morning they had to hold their nerve to edge a 21 end thriller against Blantyre 21-20 before going on to beat Craig Moss and Paul O’Donnell of Bainfield 17-14 in fiercely contested quarter-final.

The line up for the semi-final pitches Higgins and Oliver against the Prestwick pairing of Craig Lindsay and Paul Foster while the other last four clash features Stirling against Aberdeen. The semi-finals and final take place at Fraserburgh IBC on March 30 and 31.

In the ladies’ playdown action Emma Brown and Janet Fairnie received a first round bye then showed great form to beat Fintry 25-11 on the Saturday afternoon session before losing 18-12 to Allander on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile the final stages of the Scottish Indoor Bowls Championships take place at Falkirk IBC this weekend. Mark Johnston and Willie Wood MBE will attempt to become the East Lothian pairing to capture the Scottish 2 Bowl Pairs title when they line up tomorrow (Saturday) against Alex Kelly and Ian McLean of Blantyre in the semi-final at 12.30pm.

East Lothian IBC icon figure Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall MBE will begin his quest this coming Wednesday (January 16) to extend his remarkable record to six titles in the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines World Indoor Singles Championships.

The World Singles Championship is the flagship event of a three-week festival of world-class bowls at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton on Sea, from 10-27 January, which also includes the World Indoor Pairs Championship, the Ladies World Matchplay Championship and the Mixed Pairs World Matchplay Championship.
