Disappointment for bowlers

There was double disappointment for East Lothian in the Scottish Junior Singles playdown action at Abbeyview IBC in Dunfermline.

In the gents action garden county hopes rested with Chris Fallen but he couldn't quite get to grips with Paul O'Donnell of Bainfield and lost 21-15 despite leading the first round clash 14-3 at one stage.

Kim Hoggan was the East Lothian challenger in the ladies playdown action and made a promising start with a 21-18 win over Samantha McKendrick of Elgin in the preliminary round but that was as good as it got as she then lost 21-4 to Mandy O'Donnell of Bainfield.

The high flying East Lothian IBC senior side were brought back down to earth with a bump when they suffered a shock 13-shot home defeat against Portobello in the East B section of the Scottish Senior League.

The ladies are back in action tomorrow as they enjoy home advantage for a second consecutive week when West Lothian are the visitors to Meadowmill stadium. Team manager Sheena Currie has to make one enforced change as Margaret King is ruled out with a foot injury which means there is a welcome return for icon figure Janet Fairnie as she makes her seasonal debut following a spell on the sidelines with illness. Fairnie will line up at third to Morag Wood in a team that reads:

J Farrell, A MacDonald, E Brown, N McNeil skip.

N Bauld, I Combe, A McLean, D Rowan skip.

M Devine, M Hamilton, A Irvive, R McAinsh skip.

M McGowan, J Russell, J Fairnie, M.Wood skip.

The gents side return to Scottish Premier League action tomorrow when they head up the M9 to tackle B section strugglers Falkirk in another must win game. Not surprisingly the selectors have delayed announcing their team as they arewaiting to see how both Alex Marshall and Paul Foster progress at the ongoing Scottish International Open in Perth.

A side from East Lothian IBC is in action on Sunday at the Headwell Team Championship event as they tackle East Fife in an eagerly awaited second round clash at 10am. The following team has been announced:

Gents: C Cook, D Berwick, S Clark, S A Thomson skip.

Ladies: E Brown, J Russell, N McNeil, D Rowan skip.

Seniors: J Kennedy, G Good, D Kennedy, J Holmes skip.

Under 35s: R Thomson, E Fallen, C Fallen, D Lowe skip.
