Design team looks at golf course
A DESIGN firm has been appointed to lead an ongoing programme of restoration and course improvements at Longniddry Golf Club.
The club decided a structured approach and a long-term plan was needed for the links course after work on some of the holes was delayed by the freezing winter of 2010/11.
The decision was taken to hire course architects Kimber Golf — headed by former DMK lead designer Paul Kimber — and company designer Niall Glen, a member of the club, was asked to advise.
A report by Kimber tracked the evolution of the layout, originally designed by Harry Colt in 1921, and proposed ways in which characteristic Colt design features could be restored, notably by reintroducing doglegs to holes which had become straighter.
The report also looked at how the course could be made more challenging for low handicap players — without becoming too punitive for higher handicappers — by repositioning bunkers, cutting back areas of rough, establishing new mowing lines and removing sea buckthorn bushes.
