Bowls veteran edged out in thriller
East Lothian veteran Willie Wood's involvement in the Potters Holidays World Indoor Singles Championships after an 11 year absence ended in disappointment on Monday evening when the 71-year-old was beaten by Ireland's 16th seed Jonathan Ross in a dramatic second round match which went to the wire.
Paisley-based Irishman Ross started the better and led throughout to win the opening set 8-4, and then Wood, a Scottish qualifier, took control of the second to lead 6-0 but then had survive a late fightback from Ross before clinching the set with a single in the final end to force the match into a best of three ends tie-break.
Ross took the opening end of the tie break, but again Wood drew level with a brilliant last bowl delivery. Ross, however, prevailed in the decider and booked his place in the last 16.
Qualify
Wood expressed disappointment at losing so closely, but admitted the experience of being back in the championship made it all worthwhile.
"I had to play seven games to qualify in the first place – and that was no mean feat," said the East Lothian legend.
"I thought I had a chance here – I fancied the draw, but that's the way it goes. I'm sure I'll give it another go next year.
"I'll be back," promised Wood.
