Badminton pair in Poland

Olympian and former world silver medalist Robert Blair (28) and Scottish junior internationalist Paul van Rietvelde (18), both from Longniddry, have been selected to be in Poland this week for the European Thomas Cup Men's Team Championships.

Paul hopes to gain his first Scottish senior cap while Robert, who has three Scottish senior caps, hopes to add to his 51 English caps.

Born on the same day — but 10 years apart — both showed great promise from a very young age.

Paul climbed the badminton winning ladder in the sport in much the way Robert had done some 10 years before — winning from P4 at Longniddry Primary School in individual and team events and continuing that success throughout his six years at Preston Lodge High School.

Robert and Paul are both full-time badminton players. Paul has now become part of the GB squad for the 2012 Olympics and is training in Glasgow with BadmintonScotland's new head coach Yvette Yun Lou, while Robert is based with the main GB Olympic squad at Milton Keynes.
