Alex Marshall makes it to the final 16

East Lothian ace Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall claimed his place in the last 16 of the Co-operative Funeralcare sponsored Scottish International Open after easing past Hong Kong opponent Kenneth Wong in Monday’s opening round of the first World Bowls Tour event of the 2012/13 season at the Dewars Centre in Perth.

Record five time world indoor singles champion Marshall was very rarely troubled by his opponent as he romped to an emphatic straight sets victory (17-1, 13-1) and was due to meet current world indoor singles champion Andy Thomson on Tuesday afternoon for a place in the quarter-finals.

Willie Wood MBE was also in first round action on Monday when he faced up to former garden county teammate Paul Foster and it was the latter who prevailed to the next round after winning in straight sets 10-3, 7-3.

“I was really happy with the way I played but Paul was simply awesome from start to finish and if he continues to play like that he will take a bit of beating,” reflected Wood afterwards.
