A month of exciting fixtures await East Lothian teams

It’s the second half of the East Region junior football season starting tomorrow, weather permitting, with an exciting month’s set of fixtures ahead for East Lothian junior football clubs.

For example Musselburgh Athletic’s top Emirates Scottish Junior Cup fourth round tie at home to South League Pumpherston Juniors is due in a fortnight as the Olivebank squad bid to reach the last 16 of the national cup competition.

Last season, of course, the Burgh won 3-2 away at Ayrshire’s Beith in the third round of the Scottish Cup before a rematch with their 2011 Scottish Cup final opponents Auchinleck Talbot in the fourth round. Athletic took a 3-1 knockout at Olivebank from the Talbot who ran all the way to the 2012 final only to lose to Shotts Bon Accord.

Tomorrow Musselburgh are due to visit Broxburn Athletic in the East Super League for a match which was first postponed on December 8 due to a frozen Albyn Park. These two clubs met at Olivebank on September 22 when the outcome was a 2-2 draw.

Musselburgh’s mixed fortunes so far this season have seen Super League defeats to the likes of Bo’ness, Sauchie, Carnoustie Linlithgow (twice), Kelty, Camelon and Hill o’ Beath while a 1-1 draw saw them share the spoils with Lochee United.

The Burgh’s only Super League win in the first half of the season was a 4-1 home win over St Andrews United on the first Saturday in November.

Striker’s full round-up features in this week’s News. On sale now.
