£10,000 lure is working at Musselburgh racecourse
Musselburgh’s recent policy of staging at least one £10,000 feature race at each of their jumps meetings is paying a two-fold dividend, writes John Budden.
The excellent turnouts for these races has led to competitive betting and perhaps more importantly the form is working out extremely well.
Last month’s TurfTV Handicap Hurdle won by Simply Ned is the prime example. The event, which attracted a maximum field and was run at a true gallop throughout, saw the Nicky Richards’ trained Simply Ned being backed down from a morning quote of around 7/2 to the 2/1 favourite and justify that support with a comfortable success from the front running Royal Opera. The pair finished clear of the remainder but two of those who came home a fair distance behind the principals have subsequently boosted the form in such a way to indicate that this Musselburgh contest is well worth a second glance.
Hunter’s Belt who passed the post running on fourth has since been beaten a whisker on the all-weather while Allow Me, trained by James Ewart and decisively beaten at Musselburgh, reappeared to land an above average Catterick handicap hurdle last Friday at odds of 14/1.
One noted too that Hunter’s Belt was among the entries for a similar handicap at Musselburgh this Wednesday and should Noel Wilson’s progressive gelding, have run another sound race, that would be a further advertisement to the ability of Simply Ned.
Trainer Nicky Richards has always held Simply Ned in high esteem.
