Organisers of Tranent Children’s Gala have decided not to accept donations or sponsorship from payday lending firms.
Committee chairman Colin McGinn said: “We are not comfortable receiving money from companies that take advantage of people in our community who may live in poverty.
“We just felt it was worth taking a stand.”
The committee’s decision has won support from MSP Iain Gray (Lab), who said: “I commend Tranent Children’s Gala Committee for its stance on this issue and hope that other community groups will follow suit.”
