A former labourer managed to stash away thousands of pounds in three different bank accounts while claiming a range of benefits.
Neil Primrose narrowly avoided a jail sentence last week after he admitted cheating the system of £19,000 by failing to declare his savings.
Appearing for sentence at Haddington Sheriff Court on Wednesday, the 53-year-old from Wallyford was ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work in the community as a direct alternative to imprisonment.
He was also warned that any money or assets he acquired in the future could be seized by the Crown under proceeds of crime legislation.
