A black Mercedes was stolen from outside an address in Musselburgh last week after thieves broke into the owner’s home and took the car keys.
Police are urging homeowners to be extra vigilant following a series of break-ins in East and Midlothian, which could be related.
The incident in Musselburgh happened around 5.45am on Thursday, August 7, when thieves entered a house in New Street and took the keys, along with a laptop and a wallet. Similar incidents in Penicuik led to the theft of a Mini Cooper car and a Suzuki motorbike.
Chief Inspector Jim Royan of Police Scotland advised homeowners to ensure that windows and doors were secured, even during warm weather, and not to leave car keys in view. He said officers had been carrying out door-to-door enquiries in an effort to trace those responsible for the latest incidents.
