Political backing for epetition

Julie Yates’ efforts to change the UK’s childhood cancer awareness month from December to September have won support from Iain Gray MP and Fiona O’Donnell MSP, who want politicians to back the Tranent woman’s initiative.

Last year, Mrs Yates launched an epetition on the UK Government’s website to have September recognised officially as the awareness month, in line with other countries, to allow charities to concentrate their efforts in gaining public support.

Having met Julie and her husband, Paul, the politicians have tabled parliamentary motions, calling on both parliaments to endorse the month change and do all they can to raise awareness of childhood cancer and support those who experience it.

The Yates’ daughter, Niamh, was diagnosed with an undifferentiated sarcoma in 2012.
