Police in East Lothian are warning farmers and owners of rural properties to be vigilant following a series of high value thefts of fuel from external fuel containers and outbuildings in the area over recent weeks.

PC Alan Halliday, who is leading the enquiry, is asking owners to make regular checks on the levels of fuel in their tanks and take necessary precautions to protect them from theft.

He said: “Outdoor tanks in farms and other rural properties are very attractive targets to fuel thieves, so it is important that owners and those responsible for looking after agricultural vehicle fleets take precautions to deter thieves from siphoning fuel.

“I would urge everyone to be on their guard and report any suspicious occurrences to Police Scotland on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
