A Dunbar businessman was left counting the cost after fraudsters hijacked his phone system, landing him with a huge bill.
Gavin Stewart, managing director of Black Light which provides stage, sound, light and audio visual services, brought the scam to the attention of East Lothian MP Fiona O’Donnell.
She is now warning other local business to be on their guard against so-called ‘dial-through fraud’ or ‘phreaking’.
This involves hackers gaining access to a business’s internal phone system or PBX by dialling into the voicemail and creating a call divert to a premium rate number, usually overseas, which they own.
