A £75,000 plan to turn a grassy walkway at Whitekirk into a concrete cycle path has been shelved in the wake of a protest campaign.
In just three days, objectors collected more than 300 signatures on a petition in a bid to halt the work, which was due to start at the right-of-way known as ‘Becky’s Strip’ on Tuesday.
Irate campaigners said East Lothian Council failed to consult with local residents, walkers, cyclists and riders about the plan for the mile-long route.
They only discovered what was happening after a note was tied to several posts around the area last Thursday, informing people that “upgrading” of the route was due to start on Tuesday.
