Two police officers in East Lothian have been praised for their prompt action in rescuing an elderly woman from a fire in Dunbar on Friday night.

They gained entry to the High Street property, occupied by 90-year-old Yolanda Rafferty, at around 10pm after a smoke alarm was activated when a dish was left on the cooker.

They helped the terrified pensioner out of the smoke filled flat and prevented the fire from spreading. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and ensured the building was safe.

The two officers, who wished to remain anonymous, will now be given a meritorious recommendation following their actions.
