Pensioner power fails to halt housing

Seven cottages are to be built in the grounds of a sheltered housing complex in North Berwick despite strong protests from existing residents.

Kathleen Gilhooly, an occupant of Dirleton Court, told East Lothian Council’s planning committee on Tuesday that news that the “beautiful” garden space would be turned into a building site had come as a “bombshell” to the pensioners who were aged from their early 60s to 101 years old.

Another resident, Lynda Dickinson, tenant representative, added: “From my flat at the front of the building I see the garden and trees from my windows – this is perfect.”
