Owners of empty homes to be hit with extra charges

The 10 per cent council tax discount on long-term empty homes will be removed from April 1 next year.

East Lothian Council has also agreed to apply additional council tax charges on owners – 50 per cent after 24 months and 100 per cent after 36 months.

There are around 346 properties in the county which have been empty for six months or more. Jim Lamond, head of council resources, told a full council meeting on Tuesday: “Empty homes represent a wasted resource.
