Counting the pennies has paid off in Longniddry where youngsters are set to benefit from a community fundraising drive.

A collection of loose change, initiated by Longniddry Pharmacy and supported by Longniddry and District Rotary Club, has resulted in a donation of almost £400 to the village playgroup.

Launched in August last year, the pharmacy’s appeal to “drop us your coppers” soon had customers emptying their pockets and dropping off jars, bags and shoeboxes filled with coins.

The change – deposited in a large garden trug near the shop counter – was finally totted up last month, when it was agreed the refurbishment of the playgroup’s outdoor play area would be a worthy beneficiary.

Full story in this week’s East Lothian News, on sale now.
