A Haddington dad who assaulted his one-year-old daughter during a New Year fight with his wife has escaped a jail term.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, struck the baby as he and his spouse argued following a Hogmanay drinking session.

The man punched the woman on the head and body while she was holding the couple’s young daughter. He then landed a punch on his 12-month-old daughter who was sitting in her mother’s lap.

Haddington Sheriff Court heard the woman had been out for the day with her three children, but that her husband had preferred to go out drinking.

Depute fiscal Brent Bissett told the court: “Around 7pm the accused has returned home and has approached the complainer and punched her.

“The police were called, and during an interview he denied the offences and said he couldn’t remember them.”
