South Scotland MSP Jim Hume has welcomed news that Lammermuir Community Transport and Handicabs have been successful in funding bids to the Community Transport Vehicle Fund.
The Liberal-Democrat member now wants to see community transport included in the national concessionary travel scheme.
He said: “Community transport is a vital link for its users and this is particularly true in our rural areas, like East Lothian and parts of Midlothian, where some communities just don’t have a regular bus service.
“Put that together with the fact that many of the passengers are elderly and possibly have limited mobility, it’s clear that community transport is a massive support to vulnerable people in our towns and villages.
“I’m delighted that Lammermuir Community Transport and Handicabs have been successful in their bids for grant funding.
“What I’d like to see now is a move by the Scottish Government to include community transport in the national concessionary travel scheme, something which Age Scotland has been campaigning on for some time. “This would send a strong message to our elderly and disabled citizens across East and Midlothian that they deserve the same access to transport as everyone else.”
