Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery in North Berwick.

The incident happened around 8.15pm last Wednesday, November 21. A 22-year-old woman was walking along Clifford Road towards the train station when a man attempted to snatch her handbag from her shoulder. She refused to give up her bag and fought him off before he fled in the opposite direction down Clifford Road.

Police are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, around 20-years-old, 5ft 10ins tall with an average build. He was wearing a black jacket, dark-coloured baseball cap, a dark hood pulled over the cap, light blue jeans and white trainers.

A police spokesman said: “The young woman was very brave and successfully fended off the would-be thief who was forced to flee empty handed.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who was in or around Clifford Road yesterday evening and remembers seeing anything suspicious or who believes they can help us identify the male responsible.

“Anyone who can assist with our enquiries is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
