Witness appeal after East Lothian tractor accident

Police are appealing for witnesses to road accident involving a car and a tractor on the A1 near Haddington on Wednesday, September 5

An 18-year-old passenger in the car had to cut free from the vehicles by firefighters using cutting gear, before being taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment to a broken leg. The drivers of both vehicles were uninjured.

The accident happened around 11.40am on the southbound carriageway, two miles south of Haddington, between Abbotsview junction and the Thistly Cross roundabout.

The road was closed in both directions to allow emergency services to deal with the incident, and both carriageways reopened after an hour. Fire crews from Haddington, East Linton and Dunbar attended.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, who hasn’t yet been in touch with police, to contact us.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to remind drivers that the ongoing harvesting season is a particularly busy time for the farming industry and consequently there is a much greater likelihood of encountering tractors and other agricultural machinery, especially on rural roads.

“It is important that drivers fully appreciate that farm vehicles are often much larger, less manoeuvrable and can be travelling much slower than their own vehicle, and take these factors into account when driving or planning a journey.”

The police can be contacted on 0131 311 3131.
