Whitecraig explosion pensioner “stable”
AN elderly woman injured in an explosion at her home a fortnight ago is still in hospital, with her condition described as “stable”.
Juanita Tuckey (76) was cooking shortly before 1pm on January 4 when an explosion ripped through her home and caused severe damage to the roof and the gable end of her semi-detached property at Carberry Court, Whitecraig.
The Spanish-born woman, who has lived at the property for nearly a decade, suffered burns to her hands and lower arms, and was rushed to St John’s Hospital, Livingston where she is being treated.
Local councillors and neighbours told the News last week that Ms Tuckey was lucky to be alive.
The explosion is believed to have been caused by a faulty cooker.
East Lothian Council revealed that it was awaiting a report into the incident and would look into restoring Ms Tuckey’s council home.
A council spokesman said: “The HSE completed its investigation on Tuesday (January 15) into the gas explosion at 81 Carberry Court and the council awaits its final report.
“Meanwhile, the council will now concentrate on planning the renovation of the two properties at 80 and 81 Carberry Court.”
Scotland Gas Networks previously stated that no leaks were found at the property, adding that its mains and service had nothing to do with the explosion.
