Views sought on Corn Exchange’s facilities

People who use the Corn Exchange in Haddington are to be canvassed about how they would like the kitchen upgraded in the wake of concerns about the state of the facility.
The Court Street building is used for a variety of community activities, including the lunch club for pensioners.
Community councillors have again expressed their anger about the condition of the kitchen, which was branded “an absolute disgrace” at their meeting back in February.
Speaking at the group’s monthly meeting last week, chairman Jan Wilson said that the gas cooker’s oven did not shut properly, claiming: “It’s grotty to be honest.”
She highlighted the need to revamp the kitchen which was “a great asset” and had been told by environmental health that users should be cleaning the cooker.
Emily Armatage agreed: “The cupboards are all falling apart. Everything just looks delapidated and it’s needing a good facelift.”
Charles Ingle claimed: “Cleanliness is an issue and I think the real issue with that kitchen is that it’s falling to bits and needs to be completely ripped out and replaced with something new, modern and accessible. It’s unfair for people who are employed and have to work in that environment and people who have to use it as volunteers.”
Mrs Pat Lemmon agreed that the kitchen should “match this century” and added that a report about the Corn Exchange was still awaited.
Fiona-Francis Adam suggested that the kitchen could be made bigger.
Lcal councillor Provost Ludovic Broun-Lindsay (pictured) said users were to be consulted about development of the kitchen.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson added: “East Lothian Council has been in discussions with the Haddington Community Council and are hoping to pull together a meeting very soon of council officials to look at plans for improvements.
“Everyone is in agreement that improvements are necessary and that finance will be difficult, however, it is hoped that following consultation with hall users the council can start to put together a brief for upgrading.”
