United opposition to Haddington Sheriff Court closure

A plan to close Haddington Sheriff Court and move cases to Edinburgh was unanimously opposed by East Lothian Council this week.

Members of all political parties agreed to relay their protests to the Scottish Court Service which will close comments on its consultation paper about the future of Scotland’s court services today (Friday) at noon.

In a report to a full council meeting on Tuesday, chief executive Angela Leitch said: “Of particular concern is the potential delay in dealing with cases that currently go to Haddington Sheriff Court. Within Haddington the system runs very effectively and efficiently and the result of that is cases that are presented are dealt with very speedily. That supports both the facilitation of justice but it means for us in the council that we are able to make decisions, particularly in relation to child protection, adoption and issues relating to vulnerable adults very speedily.”
