Union's 'disgust' at home help axe snub
Trade union leaders have hit out at the lack of talks over a plan to axe the council home help service in East Lothian.
At the recent budget meeting, it was announced that a gradual phasing out of the service would save 100,000 in the current financial year.
By 2012/13 it would be axed altogether.
Sandra Kennie, secretary of the East Lothian branch of UNISON, said she did not yet know how many home helps would be affected, adding: "We are totally disgusted that the administration did not even have the decency to come and talk to the trade unions about this.
"There was no consultation whatever.
Awaiting
"We were totally unaware of this and heard it as it was spoken in the chamber.
"We know that there has been a service review undertaken by the council for domiciliary care and are awaiting a meeting with the head of that service to discuss this review as a matter of urgency."
About 120 full time home helps provide practical support and assistance to folk in the county like housework, shopping, laundry and preparing food.
