Tribute to local witches

The 81 local people executed for witchcraft in the 16th and 17th centuries are remembered in Prestonpans this Hallowe'en with a specially written play and ceremony at the Gothenburg.

Called The Devil's Craft, the play is the third in a witch trilogy written by local author and historian Roy Pugh.

It tells of the North Berwick witches, a coven accused of plotting against King James VI in 1590.

Memorial

Presented by the Prestoungrange Arts Festival and the Meanwhile Theatre Company, the play will be performed on October 30 at 7.30pm and on October 31 at 2pm and 7.30pm.

On both days there is a special pre-theatre buffet available at 6pm at the Gothenburg.

As has become traditional, October 31 also sees a Witches Memorial event in the rear courtyard of the Gothenburg.

Campaign

It takes place at 3pm, following the play's matinee performance, and will be led by Mary Martin, the grand-daughter of Helen Duncan, the last person in Britain to be imprisoned for witchcraft.

Mary, with the support of the Prestoungrange Arts Festival, has hit the headlines worldwide in her campaign to have her grandmother officially pardoned by the Government.

The memorial event is free and open to everyone. Tickets for the play, including an OAP special, are available from the Gothenburg.
