Tranent ASBO man arrested after desperate ‘cry for help’
A recently bereaved Tranent man was banging on walls and shouting the name of his late partner when his neighbours called the police to report a disturbance.
When officers went to investigate, desperate Richard Kernachan told them he was lonely and wanted attention. They found the 48-year-old alone in his bedroom – surrounded by empty alcohol containers and “very drunk.”
A few days later, in another “cry for help,” he made a hoax 999 call claiming to have a Kalashnikov assault rifle in his home at 8 Meadowside.
Kernachan appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court last week charged with breaching an anti-social behaviour order.
Sheriff Peter Braid deferred sentence for six months for good behaviour and ordered him to seek help for his escalating alcohol addiction.
Kernachan had admitted breaching the ASBO at a previous hearing, when the case was adjourned for background reports.
He committed the offence at his home on February 5 by repeatedly shouting and banging on the walls of the property.
He also admitted making the hoax call to the Scottish Ambulance Service on February 15.
The court heard armed officers were alerted as a result of the call, but were stood down at an early stage.
