Town’s parking shortage causes rift with residents in North Berwick
Open green space behind Tantallon Terrace properties, used as practice area for Glen Golf Club.
Residents along the North Berwick seafront are concerned that green public space behind their homes could be turned into a car park for more than 100 vehicles.
The grass area behind Tantallon Terrace, near the Glen Golf Club car park, is one of a trio of preferred sites, mooted in a consultant’s report, following talks with local councillors and the community council.
But the proposal has angered householders who felt it would lead to a rise in traffic congestion along the road and the loss of valued green space.
Resident Neil Barnes stressed: “In the summer months it gets really congested and there is already a tricky traffic situation.”
He explained that motorists drove along the road, which has a dead end, and if they could not get parked, they turned and headed back, meeting traffic coming in the other direction.
“To encourage more parking will only complicate that further. The area is also valued green space which has historically always been there,” he added.
