Switch off at Cockenzie Power Station

The end of an era was marked on Friday as coal-fired Cockenzie Power Station shut down its turbines for the last time.

At around 8.30am, ScottishPower engineers ceased electricity generation when the 45-year-old plant used the last of its permitted running hours as part of a pre-agreed decommissioning programme with the National Grid.

Now, local Labour politicians Iain Gray MSP and Fiona O’Donnell MP are calling on government ministers to safeguard the site for a gas-fired station in the future.

Neil Clitheroe, ScottishPower’s CEO of Energy Retail and Generation explained: “Cockenzie is one of a number of core power stations in Britain that are due to cease operations this year and it is vitally important that we receive clarity from the Energy Bill to allow companies like ours to be confident in making investment decisions for a new generation of replacement gas power stations.”
