The community spirit of volunteers in North Berwick was praised after the “perfect storm” wreaked havoc at the harbour in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They turned out in force to help clear up the trail of destruction which was left by a tidal surge which broke sea walls which have stood for more than 150 years.

Many dinghies and boats were damaged, a large empty goods container was swept into the harbour and 15 metres of masonry on the seaward side collapsed as huge waves battered the shore from around 3am.

East Lothian Council, which owns the harbour, has started repairs, costing £30,000, to the sea wall but there are calls for a long-term solution to sea defences following storms in recent years.
