Storm brews up over Tranent care home

A political row has erupted after East Lothian Council awarded a £9 million contract to build an new care home and day centre in Tranent to a firm from Grangemouth.

Local SNP councillors have called on Labour members to apologise for “misleading the voters,” claiming the party stated that it would “guarantee” that local firms would win contracts during last year’s election.

Councillor Donald Grant, Labour member for Fa’side, said: “What the Labour Party manifesto actually said was we would guarantee local companies the opportunity to compete for council contracts, not guarantee local companies would win contracts. I am disappointed Hart Builders were not successful on this occasion but at least they had the chance to tender which was not always the case under the previous SNP-led administration.”
