A TREASURE chest of historical documents, discovered under a plank of wood in North Berwick’s old museum, is now in safekeeping in East Lothian’s new archive centre

June Douglas Hamilton, chairman of the Friends of North Berwick Museum, and committee member Wilma Shaw couldn’t believe their ears when they heard that their find included three letters from the grandad, dad and uncle of the author Robert Louis Stevenson – the family of famous lighthouse builders and civil engineers.

They came across the documents in an old tea chest as they checked the School Road building before work started on a £104,000 refurbishment project to re-open it as a museum after a 10-year closure.

The facility was shut in 2002 by East Lothian Council because it did not meet fire or disabled access regulations, and the repairs needed would be costly.
