Sports teams pub ruling for young in East Lothian
The Riverside Tavern, Mall Avenue, Musselburgh, EH21 7BL
Sports teams could become “Trojan horses” to give under-18s access to local pubs, according to one worried councillor.
It follows a decision by licensing bosses to allow the Riverside Tavern in Musselburgh’s Mall Avenue to admit young people aged 16 and 17 until 11pm, if accompanied by an adult.
Appearing before East Lothian Licensing Board last Thursday, proprietor John Reynolds said the change in his licence was needed to allow two 17-year-olds to play for the pub’s darts team.
He was granted a similar variation to allow young people to play in pool tournaments at the Tower Inn in Tranent, which he also runs. Under his previous licences all children and young people were required to leave the Tower by 8pm and no children or young people were allowed access to the Riverside.
Burgh councillor Fraser McAllister was the only member of the board to vote against the Riverside application, expressing concern that it would set a precedent for other pubs in the county.
